The Guangzhou Symphony Youth Orchestra (GSYO) is an affiliate of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Founded in July 2011, it is the first-ever youth orchestra in China organized and administered by a professional orchestra. Jointly run by the Guangzhou Municipal Government and Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the GSYO is provided with additional platforms in advancing new models of development and elevating its artistic and administrative standards.

The GSYO’s current Music Director, Jing Huan, has served as the Principal Conductor of the GSO and is now the Principal Conductor of the China National Symphony Orchestra.

The Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is one of the most distinguished ensembles in China today. Its multi-venue facility is where GSYO trains and rehearses, guided by GSO principal players and other veteran musicians. The GSO administers the GSYO as a community project; it is a free orchestral training program for all participants following management and training guidelines of a professional ensemble.

The GSYO expanded in December 2014 by adding a Junior Orchestra for young musicians between the ages of 10 and 13. In March 2019, the GSYO established its inaugural “Children’s Foundation Program” for 6- to 9-year-old talents, providing instrumental training at the beginner’s level. In December 2021, the “Children’s Foundation Program” became a joint project of the GSO and the Culture, Radio, Film, Television & Tourism Bureau of Guangzhou Municipality. The three-tiered training program is the key component of GSYO’s sustainable, comprehensive music education system.

Since its founding the GSYO has performed more than 200 concerts, with the Xinghai Concert Hall as its regular performance venue. Beginning in September 2015, the GSYO established its own concert season, the first among China’s non-professional orchestras. The 2024/2025 season marks the GSYO’s 10th anniversary. Among the musicians who have appeared with the GSYO are maestros Long Yu and Tan Dun, cellists Jian Wang and Li-wei Qin, pianists Zhang Haochen and Chen Sa, violinists Lü Siqing and Gao Can, pipa virtuoso Zhang Qiang, sheng performer Jia Lei and guzheng player Su Chang. In January 2020, renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma shared the stage with the GSYO in three works by Johann Sebastian Bach. Ma performed with the Junior Orchestra’s ensemble groups in six iconic Guangzhou cultural and tourist sites; he also played with young cellists of the Children’s Foundation Program. These exciting events have attracted tremendous media and public attention. After collaborating with the three groups, Ma praised the GSYO for “shaping citizens of the future.”

In August 2015, the GSYO performed at the renowned Konzerthaus Berlin as part of the 16th “Young Euro Classic” Festival. Since then, the GSYO has been tasked with outreach efforts by the Guangzhou Municipal Government, gracing such venues as the Sydney Town Hall, Aula Simfonia Jakarta, Singapore’s Victoria Concert Hall, Lyon’s Ancient Theatre of Fourvière, Prague’s Rudolfinum, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Fukuoka Symphony Hall, Valencia’s Palacio de las Artes Reina Sofia, Madrid’s Veranos de la Villa Festival, Barcelona’s L’Auditori and the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest. The GSYO uses music to share wonderful stories about China and Guangzhou culture.

In July 2023, the GSYO made its debut at the Verbier Festival, garnering much attention as the first Chinese orchestra to appear on its stage. Apart from being streamed live on medici.tv, the concert video was also posted on cctv.com and Tencent Art with more than 210,000 views within China.

The GSYO has played important roles for the city of Guangzhou. In December 2017, the ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Fortune Global Forum in Guangzhou. During 2021 and 2022, the orchestra conducted two national tours, appearing at Wuhan’s Qintai Concert Hall, Chengdu City Concert Hall, Xi’an Concert Hall, Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, Hangzhou’s Grand Canal Theater, Suzhou Bay Grand Theater and Tianjin Grand Theatre. In July 2024, the GSYO made its debut at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, receiving praise from leaders of the ministries covering culture, tourism and foreign affairs as well as the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

The GSYO’s management and operational model has attracted much attention both at home and abroad. In July–August 2022 and November 2023, GSYO President Chen Zhimin was keynote speaker at the SCO Countries Youth Performance and Art Forum, League of China Orchestra’s 8th Orchestral Management Forum and the NCPA 2023 Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music. The GSYO’s unique development has been praised by guests and peers alike. In July 2024, President Chen spoke about youth arts education in China at the Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest, generating interest and fostering enthusiastic exchange.

Initiated by the GSYO, Hong Kong Youth Orchestra and Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra, the League of Greater Bay Area Youth Orchestras (LGBAYO) was established in Guangzhou in October 2023 under the auspices of the Council for the Promotion of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation. Internationally renowned maestro Long Yu, vice chairman of the China Musicians Association and chairman of its League of China Orchestras, was elected the LGBAYO’s inaugural chairman. China’s first alliance of non-professional youth symphony orchestras is founded to share the art of music, aiming to promote music and arts education in the region, initiating new developments, fostering friendships and artistic exchange and showcasing youthful vitality in the Greater Bay Area. The GSYO, Hong Kong Youth Orchestra and Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra shared the stage at the opening ceremony of the 2023 GBA Music Performances and League of GBA Youth Orchestras Opening Concert in Guangzhou, bridging East and West through symphonic music past and present.

From the GSYO’s inception, many musicians have lent support to its institutional and training programs, among them Long Yu (Music Director, GSO), American conductor John Nelson, Xian Zhang (Music Director, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra), Shao-Chia Lü (Conductor Emeritus, Taiwan Philharmonic), Wing-sie Yip (Music Director Emeritus, Hong Kong Sinfonietta), Zhang Guoyong (Principal Conductor, Shanghai Opera House), Yang Yang (Artistic Director, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra; Music Director, China National Opera House), Qigang Chen (distinguished composer), Yun Chen (Concertmaster, China Philharmonic Orchestra), celebrated violinists Cho-Liang Lin and Li Weigang and horn virtuoso Chang Chou Han. The young musicians have also benefitted from the support of internationally acclaimed pianist Lang Lang and violin virtuoso Maxim Vengerov.

The GSYO is dedicated to discovering and creating a working model for non-professional youth orchestras. It has now become the most outstanding youth orchestra in China, shouldering the mantle of international cultural exchange and representing Guangzhou’s own culture by displaying the energetic spirit and artistic achievements of China’s youth to the world.
